Anthropology Department Summer Research Assistantship

Dr. Heidi Swank is currently accepting applications for Research Assistant to travel with her to Dharamsala, India for three months during the 2008 summer. 
Open to Undergraduate and Graduate Students!

APPLICATIONS DUE BY SEPTEMBER 30, 2007

What will you be doing in India?
Ø Library and Archival Research on Tibetan community in India
Ø Interviewing and Working with Tibetan and Indian Government Officials on obtaining various demographic data
Ø Interviewing Tibetans on everyday literacy practices (in English)
Ø Keeping detailed field notes of your activities and impressions of Tibetans and everyday life in Dharamsala
Ø You may also have the option to:
o Study Tibetan with a native speaker
o Live with a Tibetan family for up to two weeks

Required Qualifications (by end of 2007-8 academic year):
Ø Valid Passport
Ø Able to Work Independently in a foreign culture
Ø Able to Interact Confidently yet Diplomatically with Government Offices
Ø Successfully completed Anth 438/627 Ethnographic Field Methods
Ø Graduate Student Standing OR:
· Undergraduate Anthropology Major
· Successfully completed at least one upper division Anthropology course 

Preferred Qualifications:
Ø Interested in Conducting own Future Research in India
Ø Experience Traveling/Living in Foreign and/or Developing Countries
Ø Upper Division Standing (undergraduates)
Ø Previous Ethnographic Experience

2. 250- to 300-word Personal Statement
a. your background and interests in anthropology and India
b. why you believe you are the best qualified applicant

Remuneration:
Ø Round Trip Transportation between Las Vegas and Dharamsala
Ø All Hotel Costs

Your Financial Obligations:
Ø Passport and Visa Fees
Ø Vaccinations (you must provide proof of vaccinations to Dr. Swank prior to departure)
Ø Food Costs
Ø Spending Money
Ø Travel Insurance (quite inexpensive through the university. You must provide proof of insurance, too, before departure.)

It is possible for you to receive university credit for your work in India. If you do register for credits, you can also apply for competitive funding through the university.
