ETS 103 - People of La Raza: Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans
Social scientific introduction to the people of Latin descent in the United States. Comparative analysis of the ways in which the various Hispanic groups define reality and how they cope with stresses produced by the processes of acculturation and assimilation. 
3 credits.

ETS 107 - Asian American Narratives and Films
Focuses on Asian Americans’ experiences and discourses by drawing upon a broad range of novels, biographies, films, and videos. Analyzes how these works recreate images of Asian Americans at different times in relation to gender ideologies, racism, imperialism, and the global economy. 
3 credits.

ETS 292 - Introduction to Chicano Literature (Same as ENG 292.) 
Introduction to Chicano literature through a study of classic and contemporary works of prose, poetry, and theater. Intended for non-English majors. 
3 credits.

ETS 295 - Asians in America
Analyzes the manner in which Asians (primarily Southeast Asians, Koreans, and Filipinos) have been perceived and related to in America. 
3 credits.

ETS 301 - Peoples and Cultures of Native North America
(Same as ANTH 301.) Survey of the culture areas of native North America and description of representative tribes and of the ways they lived when first visited by Euro-Americans. 
Prerequisite: ANTH 101. 
3 credits.


ETS 305 - Survey in Ethnic Studies
Consideration of the four visible minority groups in the U.S. — Blacks, Latin Americans, Oriental Americans, and Native Americans — revealing their background, attitudes, and behavioral patterns and their impact on the American mainstream.
Prerequisite: ANTH 101.

ETS 350 - Seminar in Ethnic Studies
In-depth study of minority groups in the United States today, particularly in urban areas. 
Prerequisite: ETS 305. 
3 credits.


ETS 360 - Comparative Ethnic Studies
Ethnic studies survey designed primarily for teachers and prospective teachers. Methodology, technique, and racial awareness considered. Assists teachers in relating equitably to all students in a classroom environment. 
3 credits.

ETS 403 - Hispanics in the U.S. Today
Study of the contemporary Hispanic experience and the problems of the Hispanic in American society. Emphasis on social development, education, economics, social protest, and civil rights. 
Prerequisite: ANTH 101. 
3 credits.


ETS 407 - Making Gender, Sexuality, and Race (Same as WMST 408.) 
Analysis of how regulations of sexuality, gender, and marriage converge with issues of race and class, and how people act upon gender, sexual, and racial differences.
Prerequisites: ANTH 101 and ENG 101. 
3 credits.


ETS 419 - Archaeology of Mexico and Central America (Same as ANTH 440E.) 
Study of prehistoric and protohistoric cultures and areas of Mexico and Central America, including the Aztecs and Mayans. Prerequisite: ANTH 105 or upper-division standing. 
3 credits.

ETS 425 - Southeast Asian Americans (Same as ANTH 401F.) 
Introduces students to the migrant histories and resettlement experiences of Southeast Asians in the U.S. to help students develop insights into how these migrants are both shaping and being shaped by the country they left behind and the United States, the country in which they now live. 
Prerequisites: ENG 101 and ANTH 101.

ETS 426 - Contemporary Asian-American Families (Same as WMST 426.) 
Examination of the effect of transnational migration on Asian-American families. Exploration of how the changing political, economic, and social circumstances in the United States and in Asian countries affect family structures and
gender, racial, and intergenerational relations. 
3 credits.

ETS 427 - Comparative Racial and Ethnic Relations (Same as SOC 427.) 
Surveys racial and ethnic relations in different societies around the world, including the United States. Special attention given to structures of inequality and to social movements for racial justice and equality. 
Prerequisites: SOC 101 or SOC 102. 
3 credits.


ETS 430 - The Chinese in America
Historical emphasis on the Chinese American, including the cultural, social, political, and educational development.
Prerequisites: ANTH 101 and ENG 101.

ETS 440 - Selected Topics in Ethnic Studies
Topic to be selected by instructor. Focuses upon student needs. May be repeated to a maximum of six credits.

ETS 457 - Native-American Literature (Same as ENG 494A.) 
Literature of Native-American peoples, oral traditions through contemporary works. May be repeated to a maximum of six credits. 
Prerequisites: ENG 101, ENG 102.

ETS 471 - Racial and Ethnic Conflict in the United States (Same as SOC 471.) 
Analysis of inter- and intra-group conflicts associated with racial, ethnic, and socio-cultural differences. Attention to both structural and symbolic forms of domination and oppression and to the effects of prejudice and discrimination on all members of society. Special attention given to social movements for justice and equality. 
Prerequisites: SOC 101 or SOC 102. 
3 credits.


ETS 475 - Seminar in Race Awareness
In-depth look at the portrayal of minority groups in both textbooks and cinematography. 
3 credits.

ETS 489 - Themes in Modern Chicano Literature (Same as ENG 496A.) 
Intensive study of major themes and techniques in the prose, poetry, and theater of Chicano writers since 1950. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. 
3 credits.


ETS 492 - Modern African-American Literature (Same as ENG 495B and AAS 492.) 
Study of recent and contemporary works of African‑American literature. 
3 credits.

ETS 499 - Independent Research
Designed primarily to give the student the opportunity to explore in-depth topics pertaining to the four visible minority groups. Research papers required. 
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
